Conditions that require newborn resuscitation

At birth, the baby will soon enter a transition period to be able to breathe alone. Unfortunately, not all babies can adapt well. If the baby has the condition, then newborn resuscitation needs to be done to help his breathing, so he is able to breathe alone. In general, pulmonary resuscitation is an important medical treatment technique performed in an emergency, with the aim that blood circulation is maintained and oxygen continues to circulate throughout the body. This technique is usually done on people who experience respiratory distress, or cardiac arrest, including for newborns who experience these problems.

When should newborn resuscitation be done?

Aspects that need to be considered in newborns include whether the baby is born full term, how the baby's muscle strength, and whether the baby cries and is able to breathe at birth. If the baby does not meet these aspects, then the baby may need to get resuscitation. In addition, there are several other risk factors that cause newborns to require resuscitation, namely:
  • Infants whose condition is affected by pregnancy disorders
  • Premature babies, born before 37 weeks' gestation
  • Baby born breech
  • Twins
  • Babies born with respiratory disorders
  • Babies who have low Apgar values

Steps for Resuscitation in Newborns

Generally when a new baby is born the doctor and the medical team will dry the baby's body and blanket it, keep the temperature warm and place the baby in the right position. Then, provide oxygen flow to the baby with levels that are in accordance with the condition of the newborn, while observing or monitoring the newborn. In making observations, the doctor will examine the baby's respiratory system, baby's movements, baby's awareness, and baby's skin discoloration. If the results of the monitoring are found that the baby's condition requires resuscitation, then it will do:
  • Provision of stimulation or stimulation to lure the baby to breathe alone.
  • Provision of artificial breathing assistance through the baby's nose and mouth.
  • Compression or compression of the baby's chest consistently to help stimulate the work of the heart and blood circulation.
  • If necessary, administering drugs to help restore the baby's condition.
If at the time of observation, the baby is suspected of having trouble or stopping breathing due to choking, the doctor will try to overcome it by clearing the baby's airway obstruction. Under these conditions, the first step taken by the doctor is to examine the inside of the baby's mouth and nose. If an object or fluid (such as amniotic fluid) is found that blocks the respiratory tract, the doctor will suck the fluid from the baby's mouth. Then do the resuscitation treatment as needed. Newborn resuscitation is generally only done by experienced doctors and medical personnel. However, parents can also learn most of the basic techniques of infant resuscitation. Therefore, an understanding of the correct resuscitation technique is needed in an emergency, and is very useful as a first aid measure to save lives.
